Art Out Front is a project of Gallery Particulier, led by urbanist Alma Hutter, documenting and celebrating the creative expressions New Yorkers place in their everyday surroundings. From front yards, stoops and balconies to windows, fences and porches, people across the five boroughs transform their homes and streets with decorations, objects, images and installations that express who they are and what matters to them.
Art Out Front is an art form in its own right, one that exists outside galleries, museums and the art market: a true folk art. These displays can celebrate where someone comes from, honor a tradition, express a political belief, remember someone, welcome a holiday, show pride, or simply make a space more beautiful or joyful. A Halloween display, a handmade sculpture, a religious image, a flag, a memorial, flowers, a painted window and much more.
There are no schools, juries or critics defining what this art should be. No financial transaction is involved, and many people have shared they do it for the community, often for the children in the community. This free form of creativity happens because people have a basic human need to express themselves. By documenting it, Art Out Front asks us to look at New York differently: What can the art people put outside their homes tell us about who we are as a city?
We are documenting Art Out Front across all five boroughs. Have you spotted something that belongs in the project? Send us a photo. Tell us where you found it and, if you know, something about the person who created it or the story behind it. Help us build a living portrait of New York through the creativity of its residents.
